On the SLT design since it is full time live view the shutter is open to allow live view, closes to clear the sensor, opens for the exposure, closes to end the exposure and then reopens to allow live view. The normal position is closed, it opens for the exposure and returns to the closed position at the end of the exposure. On a standard DSLR the shutter opens and closes, period. When the SLT design was released I had questions about shutter durability. I'm interested in how common this fault actually is.
I hate to think what it would cost to replace though. I understand the fault to be a shutter fault. I haven't been able to try anything lately with the camera as I don't have the charger with me and mine does this weird thing where as part of the 'camera error' function it seems to actually tell the info batteries they are flat when they are still %100 full - I have to put them on charge again for the camera (or any other for that matter that takes these batteries) to turn on at all. I have managed a couple of times to get mine to turn on by moving the shutter blades manually a little bit but it quickly returns to the 'Camera Error' state. It just says camera error, no menus, no AF, no shutter, no anything. To all those suggesting try different settings and/or features - when this happens the camera will not do anything at all. Seems to be a really common fault with the A33/55 from reading around. I have the same issue with one of my a55's for some time now.
